Charitable Intentions

This walk is not a brief flash in the pan. We have put years into its creation and development, and it is accompanied by serious long-term aims. It hopes, as soon as it is able, to raise enough funds to set up a charity.

These funds would be gathered by album sales, by a book or two, and by donations.

This future charity has 6 key aims:

1. To promote walking as a viable and sustainable form of transport.

2. To encourage singing, for health and community and joy.

3. To promote and support traditional British skills, in projects and communities and businesses, that are otherwise marginalized and endangered.

4. To raise awareness of the national, historical and social landscape of this land, with all its diversity and depth, and to encourage celebration of our shared heritage.

5. To sponsor people in a situation of homelessness, individuals we meet as we walk, and to provide them with specific outdoor equipment, i.e. sleeping bags, bivi bags, ponchos and stoves, as well as basic training in how to best use these tools. This will allow people with no homes to stay warm, dry, healthy and fed overnight, wherever they sleep. This will keep night shelters empty for people of greater need, and will allow first steps of independence to be made, and will avoid people needlessly getting ill when they sleep outside, to save NHS resources for more serious need.

6. To establish a network of donation-based performers who will be able to sing and make music, in traditional modes, within hospitals, care-homes, schools, and wherever such traditions are best expressed.

These are the long-term aims of “A Walk Around Britain”. We will be walking and singing for the next couple of years, and we hope to set up the charity as soon as possible, so work can begin as we go.

Any support to achieve these aims, whether by advice, time, contacts or financial assistance, is most gratefully received.

If you have any questions or proposals, please contact us.

Many thanks.
